Education Day 2010

Education Day 2010 came and went with a bang. This year, South Brooklyn's focus was "True Education = Education for Eternity". We wanted to nail down the point that salvation is tied to your knowledge of God. Education alone isn't sufficient, education that recognizes the God of Heaven is.

Three of our own graduates preached for Education Day: Chrystal Goulding, Davin Scott, and Kiarra McQueen. They are a representation of our younger membership (graduating from primary school, middle school, and high school). They did an excellent job and should be very proud of themselves. Their preparation and insight was apparent throughout their sermons.

We're happy to have as many visitors in attendance as we did, but also recognize that some of our friends, members, and interested guests could not make it out to the church. We have videos from our YouTube page for times like these, so the videos are below for you to view.

Aren't our youth outstanding? They make you feel proud that there are children who still believe in God. Their parents, teachers, and friends are proud of them.

We have year-round training at South Brooklyn that can prepare your children to do the same as these young ones have done. Why not come and see? We have friendly, eager teachers with lively classrooms. We have a photo album on Facebook that shows some of the activities. We even have a children's choir!

I hope the videos above have blessed you. Feel free to pass them on to others so that thy, too, can be blessed.

God bless you, as you bless others.

Vacation Bible School

Children across America have been looking forward to the end of June since the beginning of September. They all know that the end of June equals summer, and that means vacation. Time to drop the books and uniforms and get ready to play!

Well, life isn't all about playing, and summer isn't about doing nothing. The children need something constructive to do with their time and talents. True, children need to play. And it's also true that they need recreation. But temperance should prevail: don't give them too little to do and don't give them too much to do.

We at South Brooklyn believe that one of the most wholesome activities children can immerse themselves in during the summer months is Vacation Bible School (or just VBS for short). Our VBS this year is based on the "Castles & Crowns" evangelism curriculum. It runs for two weeks, from June 5 to July 16, 2010, from 8:30AM to 1:00PM. During that time, the children sing Bible songs, play Bible games, engage in physical activity like bike and skateboard riding, meet new friends, create arts and crafts, and make new friends, all under the watchful eyes of dedicated staff in a Christian environment.

You should see the children. They're enjoying themselves so much they don't want to go. Instead of reciting the words to songs that talk about negative lifestyles they're singing about Jesus being good to them. Instead of talking about the Diary of a Wimpy Kid they're talking about King Joash. Instead of running the streets they're riding bikes and skateboards.

Click the white triangle to see a slideshow

Elder Marcia Phillip, our Sabbath School Superintendent, implemented the program this year. She is supported by Sisters Diana Cato, Akesia Phillip, Anika McShine, Akilah Phillip, and a few volunteers. They are responsible for sharing Jesus Christ and a safe, Christian environment with your children.

Do you have children that would benefit from such a program? Maybe you know someone with children who would do well to enroll their children? Come out and join us. Spread the word. It's better for your children to be in such an environment instead of places where they would not get the same nurturing.

There's only one week left, so take advantage of the opportunity while you can. Once it's over there won't be another VBS until next year. We have a graduation planned at the end for all of the children who participated. Why not come out and support them? They would love it. (Stay tuned for details of the graduation.)

God bless you, as you bless others.

Not Independent, But Dependent

The United States of America is getting ready to celebrate Independence Day, but many Americans don't feel independent or free. They feel trapped, or enslaved, because they are without sufficient income, a decent job, a reasonable outlook, and are oppressed by financial worries. Such a burden makes them feel as if they are held captive by stress, colonized by woe.

Lifestyles have changed drastically since the economic collapse. Once thriving households are now single-parent income, not double-parent income (some have no working parents). Vacation plans have been scrapped because rent can't be paid. Nights out on the town have been replaced with meager dinners at home. Many areas of individuals lives are made to suffer because of a lack of sufficient income.

Thankfully, unemployment benefits became a reality for many, offering a cushion during the trying months of unemployment. Families were able to depend on the weekly benefits to make it through. Rent was able to be paid, Metrocards were purchased so job-readiness training could ensue, tithe was returned, and other activities could happen. Such was the case for a while. At some point, though, the money to fund unemployment benefits ran out. Lights out, the show's over.

Temporary extensions did materialize, but they were not to last. For whatever series of complex political and economic reasons, the decision to reinstate and/or continue unemployment benefits for the millions of unemployed could not be made. That, coupled with the lack of sufficient jobs for workers, created a devastating situation for the American people, New Yorkers in particular.

Next week, Congress will be taking a week-long break. If the house and Senate cannot come to a positive decision before then, another week of missed benefits will be the reality for the unemployed whose benefits have been terminated. Another week with no money means it will be harder to eat. It will be harder to make ends meet. It will be harder to sleep at night, too.

Why should you care? Laughably, for many reasons. One reason is that you may be next! There is no such thing as job security anymore. Even "good" jobs, like working for the city or state, are not guarnteed anymore. Another reason is that we are our brother's keeper. We have a moral obligation to assist them when they fall upon hardships like these.

So, what can we do? Why not turn to the most effective strategy available to us, as Christians? Let's pray and depend on God. Let's all join together and ask the God of heaven to work the situation out on behalf of the unemployed. For five days straight—July 5th through July 9th—let's pray once per day to God, asking Him to:
  • Restore unemployment benefits to those who are without until they find work
  • Open up a job for the unemployed so that they can resume a normal American way of life
  • Heal the nation's economy so that fear and lack of faith doesn't drive many to despair
  • Allow the unemployed to see God's Hand of Mercy throughout this ordeal
We don't know how God will resolve the issue, but we know that he will resolve the issue. This is a time to depend on God, even more than before. Let's turn the matter over to Him and await a positive answer. Whatever the outcome, trust that God is in charge and is doing the best thing for us all.

God bless you, as you bless others.

Dirty Hands

As the First Elder of South Brooklyn, I maintain regular office hours. This time is set aside as a ministerial service on Friday nights from 7:00PM to 8:30PM for consultations, prayer, and encouragement for the church members and general community.

While I prefer to be on time for my appointments, I understand that distractions do come about (Murphy's Law, anyone?), so I expect to see distractions. I don't always know what to expect, though. In one instance before office hours I was confronted with Murphy's Law and received a very powerful object lesson for my time.

I was busy grouting tiles earlier in the day with a rich, dark, charcoal grout. I am more flexible and dexterous using my bare hands, so I did not wear gloves. I had a great time spreading the grout and working it in between the tiles with the grout float, my hands getting messy from the grout. When I finished, I stood back to admire my hard work. Then I realized the time. I was late to pick up the children from school, so I quickly showered and got ready to leave, not realizing that my hands were still terribly stained from the grout.

Even after the shower, the edges and under my fingernails looked terrible. It looked as if I had been digging for diamonds in a mine. I scrubbed my hands as hard as I could, even using an old toothbrush to scrub away at my hands. It didn't work. I tried using oil to emulsify the grout residue. That didn't work, either. Despite my best efforts the grout simply would not come out.

I rushed to pick up the children and had to sign them out. Embarrassed, I signed the sheet to claim my little ones. I saw the after-school teacher's face when she saw my hands. "Odd", she must have thought, "this fellow is dressed up but his hands look atrocious". I couldn't hide my filthy hands, no matter what I tried to do.

Back at home, I tried scrubbing again. Nothing worked. I only got frustrated with my unsuccessful attempts. I thought of many different ways to hide my hands so no one would see them: keep them in my pockets, keep them under the desk, hold them at odd angles...anything to detract from the pitiful condition of my hands so that no one would notice them.

Finally, it dawned on me. Jesus was trying to reinforce a major truth to me in a remarkable object lesson: "What can wash away my sin? Nothing, but the blood of Jesus!" Isn't that the way it goes with sin? Typically, when someone is confronted with their sin, they do their best to discount or belittle the effects and impact of their sin. There's cover up. There are excuses. There is denial. Through it all, the sin is seen by others and there's no escaping it.

That, my friends, is where Jesus comes in. Listen to what He says in the Bible: Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool." That's a relief, not just from the fruitless scrubbing and fig-leaf knitting, but from the problem of trying to hide the sin! Jesus says that we can just sit down and have a good, old-fashioned pow-wow with Him, Mano a mano. He tells us to come to the negotiating table and He'll assume all of the odds, all of the losses, and let us emerge as a winner. Now that's a deal!

I have some dirt to scrub off. Some crimson stains, and I want to get this embarrassing dross off of myself, once and for all. How about you? Remember, there's not much to it. Just ask Jesus to clean you up and start over fresh. Tell Him your sins, ask to be forgiven, and walk away clean. If you ned help, stop by our church. Our Pastor and Elders are more than willing to coach you along.

God bless you, as you bless others.

Pathfinder Camping Trip

Special Guest Blog Post
On the Friday of Memorial Day weekend 2010, the South Brooklyn Cougars, Hanson Place Constellations, and Shiloh Chrysolites were on their way to Alpine Scout Camp. South Brooklyn provided twelve Pathfinders and one parent. There was a total of fifty Pathfinders and staff on this outing.

Press the white triangle to start the slideshow.

No one was prepared for the long hike to the camp site with their personal belongings. Fortunately, a ranger assisted with the transportation of our camp equipment: tents, food, stove, tables, etc. Our goal was to make certain that all our tents were pitched before it got dark. To our dismay, we were still setting up when it got dark, but learning to adapt is very important in Pathfindering.
On Sabbath morning, those in the Friends class were indoctrinated to the early morning routine of showers at 5:30AM. It took about fifteen minutes just to get to the showers. This was followed by a delicious breakfast of scrambled tofu, eggs, turkey bacon, and bread. Hanson Place then led out in a wonderful devotion where animated discussions took place among four groups about peer pressure, dating, role models, respect, etc.

After a short break, the Junior Pathfinders worked on the honor worms (this involved finding worms and racing them). Meanwhile, the senior Pathfinders worked on the honor orienteering where they used compasses to locate hidden balloons filled with candy. Later, we all enjoyed a sumptuous lunch of yellow rice, dinner roast, chick peas, and tossed salad.

Each class (Friend through Ranger) worked on their camping skills. They focussed on how to preserve the outdoors so others could enjoy it and how to survive in the outdoors. We then went for a short hike on the Red Dot Trail. When we got back to our campsite we enjoyed a necessary break. At this point, we were honored to have President Jones, Coordinator Burns, and Secretary Phillips join our camp. As President Jones inspected the campsites, he advised South Brooklyn to stake their tents. Sound advice, since it began to rain shortly after. To close the Sabbath, Shiloh led us in a rousing devotion. Afterwards we started bonfire time, which included making s’mores and storytelling with President Jones.

On Sunday morning, Director Charles “mushed” those who were asleep with lotion. Some of the campers were getting the hang of early morning rising for showers, so they escaped a dousing of lotion on their face.

After breakfast, Hanson Place led out in devotion. Then we were off to the day’s activities. We were divided into two groups: one group learned rock climbing and the other group learned archery. The groups switched places after an hour. Both activities were fun. Some of the campers found out that the activities looked easier than they really were, while other campers found that they were a natural and enjoyed every moment.

We spent a few days bonding, enjoying nature, having fun, and developing our skills as Pathfinders. We took tons of pictures to remember our good times by. Unfortunately, our time at Alpine was over before we realized it and we had to head back to regular life. We packed our belongings, hit the trail, and bid Alpine Scout Camp adieu until another year.

Your Valuable Body

Jesus Christ succeeded in the risky and elaborate game of death that was constructed oh so long ago, and as a result, we are set free from the entangling arms of Satan and his control. This freedom is for us to credit Christ for and to honor Him, not be cavalier and subject our bodies to licentiousness and abuse. That means excesses in vices are a no-no. Abusing our bodies is out. Endangering the welfare of our bodies or body parts is not allowed. We have to take care of our bodies, not harm them.

One way that many individuals harm their bodies is by smoking. Smoking cigarettes endangers our welfare and is a dangerous addiction that can potentially kill the smoker. Worse, the injurious addiction can affect and/or kill friends, loved ones, and even the environment. Second-hand smoke is no longer the fly in the ointment, it is the ugly reality that we face every day.

Thankfully, we live in an industrialized society that endeavors to enact laws and regulations to ensure the safety and preservation of natural resources, including the very air that we breathe. Our society even concerns itself with the well being of our bodies. In New York City, the powers that be have embarked on an ad campaign that attacks the smoking addiction by highlighting the harmful effects of the addiction.

Have you seen the ads at the newstands? Powerfully graphic posters show diseased, atrophied human organs. The shock-and-awe approach is designed to raise awareness by the smoker (and those affected by smoking!) to the effects of their addiction. It has certainly gotten the attention of New Yorkers, and it has even gotten the attention of the large tobacco companies who are suing the city to stop the publication of the ads. This reminds me of Paul asking, incredulously, if his pointing out of facts has caused a rift.

The city has gone a step further than just print ads and provided videos to bolster their ad campaign. Take a look at the videos below:

I applaud New York City for taking such a determined stance. God has taken a stance on the topic, too, and a much more important stance. Did you know? He says that our bodies are temples, and that we have to give God the best temple possible. That's quite a blessing to have been purchased by God, from Satan's control. The least we can do is show God our appreciation by taking care of these bodies of ours.

Do you have an addiction like smoking? What about drinking alcohol, or using stimulants like caffeine (yes, that even includes green tea)? Maybe a little bit of social or recreational drugs? These things, while they may appear enjoyable, do much more harm than the perceived good. Studies prove this point over and over again, but facts detailing the harmful effects of the addictions have been presented from a much more credible source: the Bible.

Make a commitment to ask God for the strength to cancel your addictions, whatever they are. Ask God to replace the dangerous habits with temperance and a healthful lifestyle. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is known worldwide for its stance on health and a lifestyle committed to God. We can offer you the assistance you need to reach out to God and make a stand. Get in touch with our Health Ministries Department. Feel free to ask us to pray for you or contact us at any time to begin your new life that glorifies God with a wonderful body.

God bless you, as you bless others.

How Important is the Sabbath?

How important is the Sabbath to you? Why is the Sabbath important to you? Who is the Sabbath important to? The Holy Bible answers all of these crucial questions concerning the Sabbath.

In Exodus 20:8-11, the Bible says "…Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy…" Why are we to remember the Sabbath day? Let us look at the beginning to see what it says. Genesis chapter 1 and chapter 2:2, 3 says "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters…"

I encourage you to read all of Genesis chapters one and two. But for the sake of time consider this: "And the evening and the morning were the first day." Gen. 1:5

"And God made...And the evening and the morning were the second day." Gen. 1:7, 8.

"And the earth brought forth...And the evening and the morning were the third day." Gen. 1:12, 13.

"And God made...And the evening and the morning were the fourth day." Gen. 1:16-19.

"And God said...And the evening and the morning were the fifth day." Gen.1:20-23.

"And God said…And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." Gen.1:26-31.

"And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made." Gen. 2:2, 3.

Let me educate you on the following words: Remember, Blessed, Sanctified, and the Sabbath. The word remember means to recall to the mind, think of again, to retain in the memory. The word blessed means worthy of worship, holy, enjoying, happiness, and fortunate. The word sanctified means to set apart for sacred use, consecrate, to make holy, purify. The word Sabbath means the seventh day of the week, which we know to be Saturday. It is observed as the day of rest and worship by Jews and some Christians. (Based on the American Heritage Dictionary, the days of the week are Sunday, meaning the first day of the week; Monday, the second day of the week; Tuesday, meaning the third day of the week; Wednesday, the fourth day of the week; Friday, the sixth day of the week; and Saturday, the seventh day of the week.)

This brings us back to our opening statement: remember the Sabbath to keep it holy; Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work; But the seventh day [is] the sabbath of the LORD thy God: [in it] thou shalt not do any work... Why are we not to do any work? Because God rested from his work, and so should we. Also he said it is a sign between me and them. Ezekiel 20:12.

If the Lord God established this in his commandments in the beginning and he did not change it, we should not change it. Look at what the Bible says in Exodus 31:16: "Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, [for] a perpetual covenant."  "Perpetual" means lasting for an eternity, lasting for an indefinitely long time.

My brothers and sister the clear evidence is before you: the Sabbath is important and God wants you to sense its importance. Now, grab your Bibles and search the scriptures to see whether the things I've revealed to you are true. Acts 17:11.

Baptism: Welcome to Our Newest Member!

We baptized a lovely candidate last Sabbath and now welcome her to our membership. She is now a full-fledged member of South Brooklyn, enjoying all of the privileges of membership.

Being a young woman, we take extra concern for her well-being. It's obvious that there are evil forces throughout that would love to quench her young fire. We, on the other hand, will do our best to protect the tender soul placed into our care.

By God's grace, she will grow into a mighty woman of God, bringing many more individuals to a face-to-face decision with Jesus, just as she did. Please take a moment to watch the video of her baptism. Join us in celebrating with her.

God bless you, as you bless others.

Baby Dedications at South Brooklyn

We take our responsibilities seriously at South Brooklyn. Very seriously. We don't want there to be an opportunity where we did not get our work done successfully.

One of our most important works is to dedicate children back to God, much the way Hannah did Samuel, or Elizabeth did for John (the Baptist). While we are responsible for the dedication and the charge to the parents to do right, the ultimate training comes from the parents, themselves. We do offer extended support and resources to the parents, so they are not left totally alone.

We recently had our first baby dedication for the year and look forward to following up with the families in the near future. Please join us in congratulating them and offering the Christ-like support that they will need in order to train their children in righteousness. Children don't come with instruction manuals, but the Bible does provide a roadmap for life.

Photos from the dedication are provided below and can be seen on our Flickr page.

The Great Deceiver (part 2: The Devil Exposed)

We saw in "The Great Deceiver (part 1)"  that Satan and his Angels were thrown out of Heaven. It stands to reason that if you were in something, then were thrown out of that something, you must landed somewhere, correct? Since Satan and his fallen angels were thrown out where did they land?

Turning to Revelation 12:9, you would see clearly where the Devil and his angels landed. My reason for giving you all of this background is so that you can better understand the reasons why we do so many crazy things.

I want to expose who it is that we are really serving if we enjoy the things of this world. My young people I don’t want to confuse you—all I want to do is make you aware of the things you are doing before it is too late. If Revelation says that the Devil and his angels were cast out of Heaven and that they were cast out into Earth, then who do you think it is that causes you to do all of these crazy things?

My young people why do you think Satan is called the great deceiver? He’s the best in the game. James chapter 4 and verse 4 says "whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God". The great book is saying that if you like the things of this world such as the wicked music, the evil television shows, the soap operas, music videos of naked women, and all the immoral things that brings down mankind values this is what makes you a friend of the world and a enemy of God.

My brothers and sisters I don’t want you to think that I am perfect: I used to do all of what you enjoy now, but I found favor with God almighty and those things no longer entice me. How do you get to overcome those struggles? You must die to self daily. That means for you to pray more (if you've never prayed before start now!).

Here are some encouraging words from God himself:
James 4:7, 10 "submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Humble yourselves before in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."
Matthew 21:22 "And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive"
Isaiah 65:24 "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear."

So you see young people all you have to do is pray and believe that he will do it for you. I have only given you enough to spark your interest, but it goes much deeper that what I have told you. May God bless you to understand much more.

The Great Deceiver (part 1)

Today we start out by focusing on the Holy Bible—specifically the book of Revelation—concentrating on chapter 12:7-9; 12.

The Bible says "And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Therefore rejoice, [ye] heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! For the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time."

My young people I want you to focus on a few important words in the previous scriptures. The word of God said that “...there was war in heaven”. Think to yourself: how could there be war in Heaven? Isn’t heaven supposed to be a perfect place?

Hold that thought in mind. “Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.” The dragon was cast out of Heaven, with his angels. But wait—what does that have to do with the great deceiver? Read a little further. Where was this devil and his angels cast out to? The devil, my brothers and sisters, was cast out into the earth, where you and I inhabit. Young people can you picture where I am going with this story?

My brothers and sister when will we wake up to what is really going on? The devil is wrath with you. Maybe you asked yourself this question over a million times: "why is the devil wrath with me? I didn’t do anything to him!" You are one hundred percent right. You didn’t. He lost the war so someone has to pay. Think of this while you ponder on this bizarre situation: your brother or sister was in a fight and they won, but the person that lost the fight, out of anger, will find someone that is related to the winner and fight them in order to get some type of satisfaction out of the loss.

Now you have to understand that we were made in God’s image (not the other belief that we came from apes). You and I are too good-looking to come from Apes. Now if you read in the book of Genesis 1:26 it says "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." I want you to focus on the italicized portion of this verse; it says we were made in God’s image and in his likeness. Do you now see why the devil is wrath with us?

Tune in next time for part 2 of the Great Deceiver to find out how is this wrath is being carried out on God’s image.

What Happens to the Dead in Haiti?

With all of the death and destruction that we became aware of in Haiti, many individuals around the planet groaned in empathetic pain and began to think about the relative frailty of their own existence. Lives were extinguished quickly. Aspirations, property, and places were reduced to rubble and morbid installations of doom.

Makeshift memorials were erected quickly—even here in NYC's populous Haitian-American communities—sprouting up like tender buds in the spring. Glimmers of hope flickered with cursory activity, like the flames on the colorful candles placed curbside, wallside, in the rubble, and anywhere the believer thought best. The lives of the victims were celebrated and remembered in whatever crude or elaborate way possible.

The State of the Dead
This blanketing wave of destruction lead to confusion, fear, and uncertainty. What was one of the most uncertain issues? The state of the dead in Haiti.

What happens to the dead Haitians? Some were innocent of the occult practices that they were accused of, yet they were killed in the earthquakes. Some were involved in forms of wrongdoings, and were killed in the earthquakes. Some were Christians, some agnostics, some Muslims, some atheists, some involved in other [religions], and they were all killed in the earthquakes.

Some fear that the dead will rise again. Some insist that the dead "spirits" must be comforted. Some argue that the dead are in a transcendental world. While the questions are certain to come, there is no need for uncertainty. The Bible is both vocal and clear with answers on this matter.

In Ecclesiastes (a book in the Bible written by the second wisest man ever), the Bible says "…never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun…" What this powerful statement tells us is that the Haitian dead—as well as the tourists or anyone else who died in the tragedy there—are simply dead. They are doing nothing right now except decomposing. They do not roam the streets at night seeking solace. There is no need for libations to be poured out. No need to place offerings at their tomb.

The Bible also says "...For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten. Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished..."

Now that they are dead, what is the next step for the dead? The Bible says "…And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment…" Like all humans who have died, they will be judged [at the appointed time] to determine their fitness for eternal life in heaven. They are dead right now, awaiting judgment.

The Absolute Authority
We are fortunate enough to have the Bible as our absolute authority on all things relating to death. The Bible gives us documented proof that the dead are actually dead. This removes the fear and uncertainty that has enslaved billions of humans regarding loved ones, spells, and beliefs that the dead spirits will plot harm against the living.

Follow Up
What can we do right now, while we are alive? We can turn our lives around and allow Jesus Christ to be in control. This is a prime opportunity for us to secure our standing in Jesus so that our opportunity to make it to heaven becomes real. Jesus has allowed us time to do this before it is too late. Are you ready? Stop by our church. We can help you take the next steps.

God bless you, as you bless others.

I Will Keep You in Perfect Peace

My brothers and sisters, I have a question for you: "Do you know what perfect peace is?"

There was once a man by named Adam. You might know him as the first man that was created in this world. One day Adam and his wife were tending the Garden (of Eden) and everything was perfect—until his wife left his side. The God that created them gave them perfect instructions that would keep them in perfect peace, and that included them being together as one.

In addition to Adam and his wife, there was a jealous angel around that lost his unique position in Heaven. He lost his position because he wanted show the other angels that the government he wanted to implement was better than that of his creator. He thought to himself "if I can’t rule in Heaven I will go and rule your other created beings that was made in God's image." After leaving Heaven, he went to cause God’s children to sin and he was successful at doing that. Soon after, Adam and his wife realized that they were naked and they were ashamed of themselves.

Do we see where and when that perfect peace that Adam and his wife had was removed? It was removed after they sinned!

The book of Isaiah says “Thou wilt keep [him] in perfect peace, [whose] mind [is] stayed [on thee]: because he trusteth in thee.” As we can see clearly, if Adam and Eve (his wife) had kept their eyes stayed on God they would have remained in perfect peace and would not have tasted death. The Bible tells us “For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” My brothers and sisters, if you want peace serve the Lord. Riches of this world can’t keep you in perfect peace. If you put all of your trust in God he will give you eternal joy. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH [is] everlasting strength.

Focus on the Message

The nation recently enjoyed a day celebrating the life accomplishments of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Without a doubt, the world is a better place as a result of Dr. King rocking the boat and ruffling the feathers of those who were unwilling to sit and listen to good counsel.

Because of his humanitarian efforts, [racial] tensions have abated, tolerances have increased, and peace is a concept not too hard for contending ethnicities to embrace. Despite all that the world is striving with, Dr. King's dream still seeks to make inroads into the lives of many. Undoubtedly, his dream and efforts have a far reaching, if not global, impact.

Dr. King's legacy is one that encourages us all to invest ourselves deeply into goodwill. It brings a smile to our faces and makes us proud of our country, despite the sordid past and recurring infractions.

With such an influence, and the genial mood that thoughts and memories of Dr. King engender, I found it tasteless and ill-timed for an article to be published that stated that January 18, 2010 (the very day that we celebrate Dr. King's legacy) is "the most depressing day of the year".

The researcher credited with the finding alleges that his theory is the result of a complex string of equations that incorporated data gleaned from reliable sources. The article was published on one of MSN's lifestyle websites. While the article does call attention to serious issues that modern humans are faced with, I find it extremely troubling that the researcher who presented his case would arrive at such a date for his theory.

Despite the melancholy mood that the article suggests, I remain encouraged by Dr. King's work and suggest that you do, too. As a people that God watches over, we will hear unsettling messages that seek to steal our joy. Resist the urge to listen to the negativity. Listen, instead, to words of encouragement. Words of inspiration. There is a wonderful scripture in the Bible that speaks to this very issue, and was relevant even back when Dr. King was alive. It's found in Hebrews 6:10 and says "God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them." Because of that, I believe that Dr. King's message, and not the message in the article, will prevail.

Be strong, and concentrate on the message of Dr. King's dream. Strong Christian values are present there. It's a message that God wants us to be aware of, but the devil wants us to miss.

God bless you, as you bless others.

The Father Knows

"But my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:19

Let me share some good news with you: we have a Father who knows all of our needs. Isn't that incredible? That's better than insurance: it's assurance. There is a mighty God that knows whatever it is that we need.

Since God is aware of our needs, it's easy to understand that we could never find ourselves in any situation or position outside of God's knowledge and care. Not only does God know our physical needs, but He knows our social needs, our mental needs, our spiritual needs…any needs. He is concerned with our entire life.

God never leads us—His children—other than we would choose to be lead. If we could only see the end from the beginning, and discern the glory of the purpose which we are fulfilling as co-workers with Him, we would be in much better shape. God is willing to lead us day by day, because He knows where we should go. Let's be thankful that He knows!

So you, dear reader, whoever you are, wherever you are, and in whatever your situation, you are in His radar. God knows your needs and He will supply them for you.

God bless you,

Haiti Didn't Ask for the Earthquake

Haiti didn't ask for the earthquake. It came suddenly, like a flood. True, some scientists said that a catastrophe such as this was due to hit the island, and they were right, but people generally weren't expecting it. The earthquake caught the island off guard.

My heart and prayers go out to the Haitians in this troubling time. Many people died instantly. Some shortly after. Many are injured and suffering. When I watched the news this week I saw the hurt, the pain, the destruction... My heart was heavy and torn apart.

As a human being, I was empathetic to these individuals who I never even met. That's the kind of compassion that Jesus has to all mankind. He hurts when you hurt. I know God will send His mighty healing hand down and touch everybody. I'm praying for them hard and constantly.

Does God know the Haitians are suffering? Of course. Is God responsible for that? Of course not! The Bible tells us that God knows our future and He has plans for us to be successful, not destroyed. That includes Haitians! God didn't want the earthquake to hit the island.

Brothers and sisters, young people, keep the faith. A lot of people blame God or blame Haiti, but they don't know the truth. Remember, God has plans for us all to prosper!

God bless,
Elder Claudius Taylor

Ring, Ring! Young People it’s for You!

Unknown Caller: Ring, Ring!

Young People: Hello?

Unknown Caller: Finally you answered your phones! I have been calling you for so many years. Have you been avoiding me all of this time? I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but how is it that you answer when your other friends call, but when I call for something more important you don’t answer my calls?

(Silence.)

Unknown Caller: You can’t image how much I have missed you. I want you to know that I haven’t stopped thinking about you. I haven’t taken my eyes off of you since the day you were born. I want you to know that since I left Earth all I have been doing is speaking on your behalf. You can’t image how painful it is for Daddy to watch the things that you do for your...friend. I want you to know that the friend you have cares nothing for you. The friend that you now hang out with was once my Daddy’s "son of the morning". Now his sole purpose is to destroy everything and everyone that mirrors my Daddy’s image. I am begging you—please stay away from him.

Young People: Friend? Who are you talking about? The things that you are saying are not true. My friend cares about me: he takes me to the best parties, he teaches me to wear the coolest clothing—you know the shirt with the skull on it, my pants below my butt...this is the style now. He tells me the best movies to watch—you know, the ones with all of the shooting, car chases, murders...and don’t forget the naked ladies!

Unknown Caller: My young people, listen: “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” My dear young people, I urge you to read for yourself the history of your friend to see what he is really like. Pick up the King James Version of The Holy Bible and read. It is the best novel ever written. I am telling you once you start reading you will never be bored again.

(Silence.)

Unknown Caller: If you haven’t figured out who is speaking and who this friend is, I advise you with love and concern to please read the book I suggested to you. Goodbye for now. I will talk to you soon.

Heavenly Whereabouts

The Bible always talks about Christ's second coming, and pastors preach that all of heaven will be empty when Jesus comes. But where will God the Father be?

The Bible says "…in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself". God the Father will be in the same position as He was when Christ came the first time—right there with Jesus.

It's a reassuring thought that God the Father and God the Son will be in the same place. If we remain where Jesus is (by doing what He asks us to do), we will, by simple association, be in the same place God the Father is! That kind of thought lets me sleep good at night.

So, how do can we be where Jesus is, who is always where God the Father is? The Bible gives us a simple formula and it calls for unity, at its core. Jesus wants us all to be unified as a body of believers so that we can be with Him. He is with His Father. So we can be with Jesus, who is with His Father, and we can all be together.

Is there anything stopping you from being unified with your brothers or sisters? Take a moment to resolve your differences. It's the Christian thing to do! Once reconciled, you'll be in unity, and therefore with Jesus, who is with the Father.

God bless you as you go about doing good.

Tragedy in Haiti

On Tuesday, the nation of Haiti was rocked with a devastating earthquake that registered an astounding 7.0 magnitude, which sent aftershocks of up to 5.9 further across into the Dominican Republic. Without a doubt, something major happened that should send a message to Haitians, Haitian-Americans, Americans, and humans in general.

One message that the earthquake should have sent is that, as predicted eloquently in the Bible, there will be a time when strong buildings, cities, and nations will not be able to stand. There will be earthquakes and famines. Major tragedies.

But another message is sent, one that pulls at the heartstrings of every human with compassion. What is that message? That we love one another. That, I believe, is a message that we can all accept.

Jesus Christ said "…by this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another", and I believe that. In this time of tragedy for the Haitians, we as humans have to rise to the occasion and take a firm grip of the indomitable "human spirit"—the same one that New Yorkers resorted to during the tragedy of 9/11—and show our love to our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

What can you do to support? Find what you can satisfactorily do and exert the effort to see it through to fruition. There are humans in legitimate need depending on your benevolent assistance. Find the most wholesome resource to give to, and then trust that God will do the rest. If you need help choosing a place to give, consider ADRA. Their track record is impeccable.

God bless you, as you bless others.

A Successful Failure, part 2

Last week we embarked upon an urgent concern surrounding family success or failure. The point was made by defining success as "fortune" and failure as a careless regard for the original institution. Marriage and family failure has reached epidemic proportion in today's society.

There are many families who have a sincere concern for marital maintenance or marriage recovery. The major cause of marital failure is the lack of respect for, or the understanding of, the marriage institution. Since marriage originated with God, it is reasonable to assume that God must always be in the marriage. A loss of respect for the creator and originator of marriage is a sure recipe for a marriage failure.

The best approach to marital maintenance or recovery is to establish or renew your relationship with the Creator. Trust Him to begin the process for full recovery to a normal, healthy marriage.

Marriage is something that will influence and affect your life both in this world and in the life to come. A sincere partner will not advance his plans in the direction of marriage without the knowledge that God approves his course. Weigh every sentiment and watch every development of character in the one with whom you are thinking of linking your life destiny.

You may have a very successful marriage. A successful marriage is a happy one and breeds happy, successful offspring. Thus you are building a strong foundation for future success for many generations. Take the time to nurture your partner. It takes love, patience, and hard work to achieve true success in your marriage and family.

God bless you,
Pastor Jones

A Successful Failure

It appears that the fortune of a very wealthy golfer is threatened by any number of external variables, both public and private. You can decide for yourself what you believe the variables to be. No, I do not speak of the sponsors who are dropping him one by one.

We sometimes use the word fortune to describe wealth or material accumulation. The truth of the matter is that each of us has inherited a God-given fortune that should be treasured: life and family. It is my opinion that family is the most vital source of wealth and fortune one could ever realize in this life. It is an extension of God Himself. God created human fortune on the sixth day of creation week when He created family. Family may not only be considered a fortune (by some) but it is a treasure. This is much more than the wealthy golfer can ever earn after 18 holes.

There is too much at risk when a man allows a temporary thrill or fling to threaten the fortune that he certified with an oath at the altar. This may very well be the beginning of many lives heading toward a dysfunctional future. The wife and children in the family are an essential part of the wealth and happiness to one another and to society. It is always disastrous to gamble with a life. Life is too precious, it is not ours to give, to take or to destroy.

I am personally thankful to be fortunate enough to be born into wealth. Please don't misunderstand, I am part of a very humble family with hardly any material wealth. We are still fortunate to be part of a strong family foundation.

You too are wealthy. Please be sure that you do not squander this treasure. I intend to expand upon this blessing of fortune of which you are also recipients. Let's talk again soon.

God bless you,
Pastor Jones

New Year, New Life!

Individuals across America just came out of a festive holiday season of revelry, celebrations, and merriment. Visits from old friends, resolutions for a better new year, and overall goodwill prevailed. Key among all of the activities was feasting: lots of good food and drink were consumed.

As usual, many individuals overindulged and paid the price for their liberties at the table with added (and unwelcome!) holiday pounds, discomfort, regrets, and the nagging hangovers. All of this is typical of the festive holiday season. But what about you: have you overindulged? Are you in need of a diet to shed the extra poundage? Do you regret the extra helpings of delicacies, as alluring as they may have been? Do you suffer from a hangover?

I want to encourage us all to see the holiday season and its typical rituals as a metaphor for life. We live cyclically where we experience a period of normalcy, then we indulge, regret, and make a declaration of change, only to fail and repeat the cycle over and over again. And again.

With Jesus Christ in our lives, we can prevent the endless cycle of ups and downs that we abuse ourselves with once and for all. The Bible has a wonderful counsel that says that Jesus came to give us a better life, and that is very sound counsel. It's certainly good news to know that we can exchange the roller coaster lifestyle for the rock-solid stability of being with Jesus Christ.

If you haven't made that commitment yet, why not do it today? There really isn't much that you would lose, except the uncertainties of life... Becoming a Christian doesn't relegate you to a life of denial and boredom. You can still enjoy yourself. Remember, Jesus came to give you life, and a full one at that!

If you're in town, I encourage you to stop by our church on a Saturday morning. Hear us talk all about Jesus Christ. I'm sure it will encourage you as you enter this new year...and new life.

God's blessings,
Elder Scott Hampton

Welcome to South Brooklyn!

"Ye are the salt of the earth...ye are the light of the world...let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven".
— Matthew 5:13, 14, 16

Welcome!
The doors and hearts of the South Brooklyn Seventh-day Adventist Church are always open to welcome you. We are not unique in that we too experience the daily vicisitudes of life.  As you visit or join with us in worship or other activities you will find us to be individuals of like passion.

We have re-examined our position in the community where we serve and we want to expand our services to include the needs we have neglected.  Please do not hesitate to call on us whenever there is a family, social or spiritual need. Because there are a broad range of health concerns in our communities today we are prepared to offer counsel in food preparation as well as other counsels on health and wellness.

Safety is another very big concern to many parents and guardians today. At South Brooklyn we offer excellent counsel for keeping safe and becoming a part of the solution for such a vital concern.

It is not a surprise that worship has declined among the churches in the black community, here again we invite you to come and join with us at South Brooklyn where we will listen to your opinions and suggestions. We know that traditionally we have looked to the church for leadership in our community, at South Brooklyn we want to rebuild the "old waste places" and offer the spiritual and social security which has been the backbone of our families for centuries.

We are most interested in the youth of our community because in reality we will look to you as leaders in the future. We invite you to come and dialogue with us in an exchange of ideas for the development of spiritual growth in our neighborhood.

Finally, as pastor of this great institution in this community, please feel free to call upon me for all your spiritual needs. I gladly offer a broad range professional counsel. Call for marriage, premarital, divorce recovery, or other social needs. We look forward to seeing you at South Brooklyn Seventh-day Adventist Church in the near future.

God bless you,
Pastor Jones
